This patent relates to the creation of a network model for alarm correlation in communication networks. The model uses a concept of communities for the purpose of linking components in such a way that events affecting one component in the community are broadcast to others in the community. The community communication infrastructure is constructed using a blackboard. This patent deals with a hybrid local, global mechanism for admission control in a communications network but is more generally applicable to any network system where local control decisions are made upon local sensory information but a global view would allow for enhanced decision making. The patent proposes the use of search algorithms from (population based) Evolutionary Computation for global search of all allowed admission control strategies, coupled with local adaptation of admission control strategies using Reinforcement Learning (or hybrids). Local controllers perform online learning or adaptation. The global controller performs off-line learning. Strategies are exchanged between local and global controllers, allowing the global controller to compute the utility of a particular strategy in a network-wide setting.

The RouteFinder patents relate to the efficient search for paths in a connection oriented network for planning purposes in a virtual network. RouteFinder uses a genetic algorithm along with a novel, indirect encoding in order to compute routes in a network that that balances resource usage in that network. Point to point and point to multi-point connections are considered and the ability to deal with included or excluded nodes or links is supported.

The Automated Connection Manager uses RouteFinder technology (see above) along with a representation of the constraints imposed by SONET/SDH switching technology for the purpose of computing channel and path assignments in transport networks. This approach to virtual link calculation has been incorporated in Nortel Networks SDH family of products.
